Current Research

The current pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to many small businesses, particularly those that rely on a steady stream of new leads to grow or, in some cases, merely survive.


Severe restrictions on many of the “traditional” methods that businesses use to find new clients - such as exhibitions, conferences, networking events and even face-to-face meetings - mean these are no longer an option for now, so it is increasingly important for many businesses to pivot to finding new clients online.


But as many are finding or have found out in the past, creating a stream of quality, targeted sales leads online isn’t easy and can be very expensive. Put simply, my hypothesis is that Google and Facebook get richer while small businesses grapple with poor conversion rates and struggle to get a decent ROI.


Hence the main objective of my research is to better understand the biggest challenges faced by small businesses finding new leads online and converting them into paying clients. And importantly, working out what can be done to help.

How do you define a small business?

Is there any obligation?

Do all small businesses qualify?

I am interested in talking to businesses that range in size from solopreneurs through to SMEs of around 50 employees.

In short yes, but my particular experience tends to be with b2b or b2c companies that sell higher value goods or services (£100+ with no upper limit) so I am better able to serve them.

What can I expect?

Once you book a time slot you will receive an invitation to a Zoom meeting where we will have an informal 15-20 minute chat about your business and online challenges.


I would hope to be able to offer some insights during our call based on my experience but that will of course ultimately depend on the problems that you describe!


In addition, as a thank you for taking part, I would like to invite you to a tele-seminar once my research has concluded to share my findings and some practical solutions you can put into action right away (probably early January).

Absolutely not! This is simply a “you help me and I’ll help you” arrangement. We are all facing challenging times at the moment and I believe the more we reach out to help each other the better.

What will happen with the research?

Depending on the findings I may publish a paper and/or the data may appear in a forthcoming book. I may also create a course to help businesses with specific problems. But rest assured that everything we discuss will be in absolute confidence and no one will be individually identifiable.

Kevin Wakeford

With 30+ years strategic marketing experience in various technology sectors, Kevin is founder and CEO of TouchPoint Inbound, a digital marketing agency that helps clients transform their marketing, from planning to implementation, utilising the latest, proven, digital marketing techniques.


He is an expert in Lead Generation, CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation), Inbound Content Marketing, Marketing Automation & Email Marketing and works with clients to maximise new leads, convert them into paying customers and exceed sales budgets.


Prior to setting up his current business in 2010, he ran a full-service marketing agency and also has extensive, client-side, blue-chip corporate marketing experience, having headed up various successful business units at Sony with marketing budgets in excess of £2M and revenue targets of £600M+


Kevin has also worked on various consultancy projects with start-ups and SMEs, helping them establish new brands, new clients, thought-leadership status and increased valuations prior to sale.


Kevin holds an MBA with distinction from Warwick Business School and achieved Chartered Marketer status in 1999. He regularly attends conferences in the U.K. and U.S.A. to keep abreast of the very latest digital techniques that he can pass onto his clients.
